The Man with the Golden Heart
Alan S. Vonder Haar, age 47, passed away suddenly at Spring Valley Hospital, Tuesday, November 1, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alan was born June 23rd, 1964 in Little Falls. He attended Little Falls Community High School and Graduated in 1982.
After graduation, Alan served his country in the United States Army for four years and was honorably discharged in 1986. He served the majority of this time in Panama and Honduras as a military policeman. This is where he discovered his love for hot weather. After leaving the service he attended St. Cloud State University back home, in Minnesota, where he found his calling to work in the Gaming Industry.
Alan worked at many casinos throughout the United States and overseas looking for his dream job. He moved to Las Vegas in 1995, and finally found his career position with Caesars Entertainment group as the surveillance manager for the Rio All Suite Hotel Casino. Alan Loved and Lived his life for this position and the employees that worked for him.
While in Las Vegas, Alan made many friends everywhere he went, and could talk for hours with total strangers. Shortly after arriving in Las Vegas he met his love Mary, her son Gabe, and the rest of her family. They where an immediate hit
As with everything, once you earned Alans respect and love, he would do anything for you. This was certainly evident when it came to family, friends, and his employees that worked for him. Once you earned his respect you had it for life.
Alan had many hobbies outside of work which was hard to believe as his work was his life. He enjoyed home projects, electronics, shopping, and music. His two true hobbies he loved were the MN Vikings and Musky Fishing. He followed the Vikings regardless of the year and how the team played. One clear indication of this was his Viking Room. If there was a Viking collectible, he bought it or thought about buying it to display in his room. His other love was Musky Hunting as he called it. Alan made several trips to Musky Bay in Canada, stopping along the way to say Hi to family and friends. Alan could spend 24 hours straight casting for the elusive Musky. He had a knack for being in the right place at the right time catching several monsters. He even had the next hunting trip on his calendar for next summer.
In the near future, there will be another Celebration of Life held back home in Little Falls for family and friends.
