Al Levitt, a longtime Las Vegas resident, passed away peacefully at home on August 21, 2020, while surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Al spent most of his life in Las Vegas and New Orleans; two cities he loved. He adored Edith, his wife of 70 years, and was a fabulous father to Leon (Libby) and Karen (Chris), grandfather to Elizabeth (Chris), Stephen (Michelle), Aaron (Erika) and Joshua, and great grandfather to Asher, Jacob, Cayden and Jaxon.
In a converted van and RV, Al and Edith traveled all 50 states, 13 Canadian provinces, rode ATVs on the Tundra, took a seaplane adventure in Alaska, and even drove beyond the Arctic Circle. He made friends everywhere and never met a stranger. He grabbed the fun and was a lover of life.
Al was a passionate fan of The Tulane Greenies (where he attended college), The New Orleans Saints (attended the first game ever played in 1967), and became a huge UNLV fan—regular football tailgater and traveled with the basketball team to conference tournaments. He loved a martini followed by a brandy and cigar... he loved a bowl of gumbo and a Nawlins' po boy... and he loved talking about old Las Vegas.
Al was a longtime Kiwanian, attending hundreds of chapter meetings while traveling. He gave so much back, he read to schoolchildren, started several Toastmasters Clubs including, in 1977, the “I’ll drink to that” club and was the inaugural recipient of the Nevada American Cancer Society Life Saver Hall of Fame award. Al was a proud Marine (Semper Fi), and served in WW2 and Korea. Al lived a very rich 91 years and he will be dearly missed.
A celebration of his life will be planned (likely next year) and the family looks forward to gathering with his many friends to share stories.
