ALFONSO JOSEPH SIMMS, RETIRED ARMY (SFC)
On Sunday, December 16, 2018, our Lord called Alfonso Joseph Simms, home. He was the oldest and beloved son of Harriett Addison Simms and a cherished brother of the late Clifton Thomas Simms, Jr. He was born and raised in Washington, DC on April 26, 1931. He received his education through the Washington, DC Public School System. Alfonso joined the Army in 1952 and married his high sweetheart Dec 25, 1952. Delores ""Lois"" Mae Holland and Al raised six children. Alfonso's army career assignments included Ft Leonard, MO, Ft Benning, GA, Ft Campbell, KY, Viet Nam, Ft Leavenworth, KS, Fort Ord Presidio, CA, where he learned Spanish for his next station in Ft Gulick, Panama Canal Zone. He retired at Fort Bragg 82nd Airborne Division in NC in 1978. He later retired from the United States Postal Service.
He absolutely loved sports. He coached youth baseball, football and bowling. For many years he was an avid bowler and fisherman. He also enjoyed playing bingo at the Ft. Bragg N.C.O. club and slot machines in Las Vegas. He had a passion for music. You would often find him singing and listening to his CD's. Nat King Cole, Aretha Franklin, and Mahalia Jackson were among his favorites. Whenever possible he absolutely loved spending time or just talking about his dog Deacon, his loyal companion and ""best buddy"".
Delores, after 53 years of marriage, preceded Alfonso in passing, as well as two sons Alfonso Joseph Simms, Jr and Michael Anthony Simms.
Those left to treasure his memory are his daughter Valarie Simms Morris of Aurora, CO, son Karl V. Simms of Aurora, CO, daughter Lanier Simms De Morales (Jose) of Las Vegas, NV, son Floyd C. Simms (Rebecca) of St Mathew, SC, daughter in law Sophonia Robinson (Jake) of Silver Springs, MD, grandchildren, Demeca Simms of TN, Christopher Morris of CO, Candace Simms (Naushad) of NC, Randea Williams (Dameon) of NC, Rachel Weathers (Mil) of NC, Travis Weathers of CA, Adam Simms of CA, Leah Arnold of LA, James and William Simms of WI and a HOST of many relatives and devoted friends are among our loved ones, Ernestine Pruitt, Romi Weathers, Lena Graham, Tammy Abraham just to name a few.
