Barbara Dawn Garland passed away Christmas morning, December 25, 2019, at home and in her daughter’s arms after an 18-year struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She accepted her fate early on in the disease process and remained positive through all of the ugliness that Alzheimer’s brings. True to character, her light continued to shine bright until her final breath.
Barbara was born in Provo, Utah October 27, 1928, to Alma and Agnes Rosalia Knight, the youngest of nine children. There was no running water in their home, but the home was full of love and Barbara had nothing but the fondest of memories and the deepest love for her parents and siblings.
After graduating from Cedar City High School in 1946, Barbara moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado and attended Blair Business College. The following year she moved back to Cedar City and attended Branch Agricultural College in 1947 where she met her future husband.
She married Ted Garland on April 7, 1950. They were married just shy of 54 years before Ted passed away in 2004. Together they had four daughters, Geri, Joanne, April, and Sarah.
Barbara and Ted moved to Las Vegas in 1952 where they remained and raised their family.
Barbara was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served as Primary President and Relief Society President in addition to many other callings. She had a deep love of music and was a proud member of the Desert Chorale. Barbara was proud of her Utah heritage and was a member of the International Society of Daughters of Utah Pioneers.
After retirement, Barbara immersed herself in Temple work at the newly dedicated Las Vegas Temple. She cherished the time spent working there but had to quit around 2006 when her Alzheimer’s symptoms worsened and she could no longer remember what she needed to do.
Her husband Ted Garland, seven of her eight siblings, grandson Laser Gale, and great grandson Alexander Hewgley preceded her in death.
She is survived by her four daughters and 3 sons-in-law; Geri Domenick, Joanne and Mike Crisp, April and Dennis Hannewald, and Sarah and Ken Lusk; older brother Milo Knight; eleven grandchildren; Christina Mushino, Jenna Fricks, Macgyver Gale, David Geller, Heidi Hannewald, Westley Harris, Lucas Harris, Charlotte Harris, Gretta Harris, Brigette Bonner, and Jentri Harris; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be at the LDS chapel at 410 N. Valle Verde Drive Monday January 6, 2019 at 11:30AM preceded by a viewing in the Relief Society room beginning at 10:30.
Interment will be at the VA Cemetery in Boulder City at a later date where Barbara will join her late husband Ted.
Arrangements are by Davis Funeral Home.
