Burton Earl Oakes

March 20, 1944 — May 22, 2020

Burton Earl Oakes Jr., 76, of Henderson, passed away on May 22, 2020 peacefully in his home and surrounded by loved ones.

Burt was born in Fort Fairfield, Maine to Berton Oakes Sr. and Arline Oakes on March 20, 1944.

Burt enlisted in the United States Air Force on June 21, 1963.  The following year, he married his high school sweetheart Cheryl Burns on October 10, 1964, eloping to New Brunswick, Canada.

After serving in Vietnam, Burt continued his military career in personnel.  Burt was the proud father of two sons, Jeff and Troy.  Burt and his family were stationed in Australia, Hawaii and throughout the Continental U.S. during his career.  After honorably serving his country, Burt retired as a Master Sergeant on October 1, 1986, earning numerous medals and awards during his illustrious career.

During retirement, Burt enjoyed working in the yard and making sure the pool was in tip top shape for the family to enjoy.  He shared time with his two special cats Buddy and Missy.  Missy was his love bug, and Buddy cuddled with him at night and shared naps with him every day.  Christmas was a special time of year for him, as he enjoyed the music and decorations while embracing the season of giving with his family.

Burt is preceded in death by his father Berton Oakes Sr.  Burt is survived by his wife and best friend Cheryl Oakes, his two sons Jeff and Troy Oakes, brother Dana Oakes, mother Arline Oakes, three granddaughters (Brittany Glenn, Amanda Oakes and Mia Oakes), 4 great grandchildren, beloved in laws (Lois Whitmore, Irma and Peter Deschesne and David Burns) and of course…Buddy and Missy.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Omni Care Hospice and especially Andrea and Janet, who through their professionalism and compassion made this very difficult transition bearable.
