Catherine Mangold, 74, of Henderson, Nevada, was called to Heaven’s Gates on November 19, 2020 while in the comforts of her home. Catherine was born in New York, NY to Vincent and Catherine Zieger on March 3, 1946.
Catherine, ‘Cathy’ Zieger grew up on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and attended private Catholic schools from kindergarten through St. Jean Baptiste High School. Before graduating, Cathy moved with her family to Sunnyside, Queens where she to continued commute to St. Jean Baptiste until graduating in June of 1964. Cathy then began working at Western Electric as a top notch secretary. In 1964, she met Fred Mangold on a date set up by mutual friends. He proposed on Christmas Eve in December of 1966 and they later married on May 4, 1968 in Queens, NY, eventually settling on Long Island to raise a family.
Cathy devoted her life to her children, leaving her job when her first child was born. A loving mother and homemaker, Cathy went on to have four children. It was important to her to see her children learn and thrive in activities they enjoyed and she spent her time watching everyone’s sporting events and other interests. When her children were grown, she went on to have a ten year career at the New York DMV where she was highly regarded.
Twenty years ago, Cathy and Fred would leave the only home that they knew to embark on an adventure that led them across the country to live in Henderson, Nevada. Cathy always loved the beautiful desert landscape that Nevada had to offer. While in Nevada, she delighted in playing the slots and spending time in her new surroundings with new and old friends. She had a great love of travel that took her to many special places throughout the U.S. and other locations including Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean and Europe. She loved home decorating and was an avid fan of watching talented individuals and learning trade secrets. She enjoyed the game of Mahjong and played for over forty years with great friends both on Long Island and in Nevada. She loved music and her favorites included Kenny Rogers, Placido Domingo and Elvis.
Catherine and Fred would go on to celebrate 52 wonderful years together and throughout that time, Fred continued to refer to Cathy as his bride. He chose to have her viewing at a funeral home across from the airport to honor her love of watching the planes take off and land and pay tribute to many special dates doing just that. May Catherine soar high above the clouds like the planes that she loved so.
Catherine is preceded in death by her parents Vincent and Catherine Zieger.
Catherine is survived by her Husband, Fred Mangold; Children Deborah and husband James Polyak, Jennifer, Kimberly and husband Julius Donat, and Fred and wife Janel; Brother James Zieger; Grandchildren Nicholas, Austin, Sean and Ava; and Mother-in-law Mildred Mangold.
