DR. CATHIE KELLY Dr. Cathie Cook Kelly, 65, of Henderson, lost her valiant fight against cancer Feb. 26, 2012. Born in Pittsburgh Jan. 29, 1947, Dr. Kelly joined the UNLV faculty in 1980 after receiving her Ph.D. in Art History from Pennsylvania State University where she studied with Professor Hellmut Hager. Her specialty was Italian Renaissance and baroque art and architecture and her research interests were centered in Rome and Florence. She presented papers at the meetings of the Society of Architectural Historians and published in architectural history journals including Architettura storia e documenti and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, as well as in collected essay volumes such as MacMillan Encyclopedia of Architects and the Dictionary of Art. Dr. Kelly received the Outstanding Teacher of the Year award from the College of Fine Arts in 1993. She was actively involved in historic preservation in the Las Vegas Valley, served on the Nevada State Board of Museums and was a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Neon Museum. Dr. Kelly received her BA from Sweet Briar College where she was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society. Dr. Kelly was preceded in death by her mother, Sally Cook Kohl Kelly her father, Carl C. Kohl, Jr. her stepfather, Henry J. Kelly her stepbrother, Richard D. Kelly and her brother, Carl C. Kohl III. She is survived by her stepbrother, Robert W. Kelly and his wife Mary Ellen and children, Claire Kelly Finando and Alan Kelly by her sisterinlaw, Mary Theresa Kohl and sons, Chris and Sean Kohl and by her stepsisterinlaw, Mary Ann Drakely and daughter Beth Ann Bawden. Visitation will be 1011 a.m., Saturday, March 3, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at Christ the King Catholic Community, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Dr. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Cathies name to the American Cancer Society , 6165 S. Rainbow Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89118 or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Nevada Chapter, 5463 S. Durango Dr., Suite D115, Las Vegas, NV 89113.
