Charles Charley Gray III, 78, of Henderson, passed away at home surrounded by his loving family July 28, 2011, after a year long battle with colon cancer.
He was born Oct. 21, 1932, in Augusta, Ga., to Charles Gray Jr. and Marion Boyer Gray. Charley, along with his sister, Judith Godfrey deceased, were raised in Nutley, N.J.
He was a proud Scotchman, the son of a progolfer and the grandson of a golf club maker from St. Andrews Scotland. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard from 19521956, where he was the head cook on an icebreaker on the Great Lakes.
Charley was married to his loving wife, Patricia Gray, for 40 years. They and their family lived in Marietta, Ga., for 33 years prior to moving to Nevada in 2004. Charley was a dedicated husband and father who had careers in the construction and food service industries and most recently, although retired, worked as a school crossing guard.
He was an avid sports fan who loved his UNC Tarheels, Atlanta Braves, and all things golf. He loved to travel, especially for family vacations. He also loved playing in his fantasy football league with his children and grandchildren and actually won the league champion in 2010.
Charley is survived by his wife, Patricia children, Janice OBrien, Loreen OBrien, Kerri Beaulieau, Colin Gray and Marian Ito, as well as Curtis Gray and Jordan Wakeland and 11 loving grandchildren, who were central to his life.
The memorial service for Charles will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119. A celebration of life gathering will follow the service at Marian Itos home, 1758 Clear River Falls Lane, Henderson.
