Cheryl Louise Wiecek was born August 15, 1964, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was the youngest of six children. We moved to California when she was just 18 months old. Our family nickname for her was Lupe, and she was also known as Miss Mary Sunshine; even as a child she was chipper in the morning.
Growing up, she was in the Girl Scouts. She also played the clarinet (or as our dad would call it “the piccolo” because she played it so badly); she was also very good at tennis and swimming. I remember how she loved dancing in the living room with Dad and taking walks around the block with Mom.
Cheryl was like most teens of the late 70’s and 80’s: She spent her summers tanning with baby oil, and listening to Journey and Kenny Loggins. Sadly, our family lost our mom to cancer in 1981, when Cheryl was only 16 year’s old. She graduated from Palos Verdes High School in 1982. Her idea of fun at that time was flying to Iowa to spend Spring Break with our cousin Nancy.
She met Bob in 1984, where they both worked at Ralph’s in Dana Point, CA. She was in the deli and Bob worked as a butcher. She fell madly in love with Bob, and at the age of 21, they married in a small chapel in Cambria, CA. Kurt and Bob’s sister, Karla, stood-up for them, and my dad wanted to be there to walk his little girl down the aisle. Now, as Cheryl Wiecek, she became part of an instant family with Bob’s two children, Tiï¬any and Timmy.
In 1987, Cheryl and Bob moved to Las Vegas and lived right next door to Bob’s mom, Betty. That was also the year that Bobbie Michele was born, and Eddie was born two years later. Cheryl loved being a mom and spent many hours volunteering to help at St. Viator’s.
In 1990, Cheryl and Bob started their own business, Quality One Pools. Cheryl did the books while Bob worked in the field. Bob’s frustration is that people never realized that Cheryl was a silent partner and the reason why Quality One was such a success. For vacations, they loved to take cruises where Cheryl could spend time with Bob, work on her tan, enjoy her 7 & 7’s, and dance.
Before long, Cheryl and Bob bought a big, beautiful home on Enchantment Circle in Henderson where they made room for her mother-in-law, Betty.
Betty lived with them for 13 years; I often joked with Cheryl that she definitely earned her way into heaven with that one. So many great memories were made in that house. Family from Cleveland, Washington, and California loved visiting them and Cheryl loved having them. She spoiled everyone by cooking for them; we all swear we gained 5 pounds each time we visited. Both Cheryl and Bob made lots of great friends in Henderson and often talked about them like they were family. Trying to name them, I realized it would probably fill a phone book.
One of Cheryl’s favorite places to go was to their cabin in Utah. She loved it when people came to visit and, as usual, Cheryl cooked, packed lunches, drove people to Bryce and Zion, and baited hooks while everyone else did the fishing. Once again, she made friends with everyone there.
Cheryl loved flowers and made a point of keeping fresh flowers around the house. The last few years, she had some health issues but she always faced them with such grace. She also loved becoming a grandma (or mammy as she liked to be called) to Ariel, Ryder, and Baby B. She was blessed with a loving husband, who was also her best friend; along with her kids, family, and friends. And we were all very blessed to have her in our lives. We miss you, Lupe.
