Christine Roberts

January 3, 1930 — December 9, 2020

With the blessing of spending ninety years in her earthly body, Christine Shirley (Smith) Roberts was a recipient of this promise. As we reflect on her life, and the things she held dear, we know that God saw fit to grant her many years filled with the love and respect given to the ideal Proverbial woman.

Born on January 3, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Pearl Bowman Smith and the sister of the late John Henry Smith, Sr. Christine was educated in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County school system and graduated from Atkins High School. She was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church throughout her residence in NC.

In the late 1940s, she moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she graduated from La Newton’s School of Beauty Culture and was also employed at Lewandos Company in Watertown, MA.

Christine married Lt. Colonel Raymond Roberts, Sr. June 30th, 1950, whom she esteemed loyally until his demise in November 2006. To this union, she became the stepmother to the late Raymond Roberts, Jr. and Judy Roberts. She traveled extensively both domestically and abroad. Upon completion of his military assignments, she settled in Wilmington, MA, before later relocating to Henderson, NV.

Christine Roberts was the grand dame of the Smith family; she always wore that title with grace. Known for her elegant style that was both natural and nurtured from years spent as a cosmetologist. Christine could always be found not only dolled up on the outside, but also glowing from within. There is not one family member or friend who would mention her separate from her mantra, “It’s nice to be nice,” which she not only said, but she lived wholeheartedly.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories a stepdaughter, Judy (Tony) Cruz; Doris Roberts; several grand and great-grandchildren; a beloved sister, Ada Mae Smith; devoted nieces Naomi (Marvin) Blackmon, Belinda (Frank) Smith, Deborah Smith, Pamela Smith; dear nephews John Henry Smith, Jr, Robert Smith, Timothy Smith, Darran Smith, and Kennedy Smith. The Philpott family and a host of great nieces, great nephews and extended family members. Special friends who celebrate Christine’s memory include Marilyn (Tom) Rigo, Roslyn Henry, Tracy Jackson, Evelyn West, Loretta (Kenneth) Hewitt, and Janie Reid.

We are thankfully all reminded of her kindness and generosity, and the knowledge that she truly believed that a “merry heart doeth good like a medicine,” (Proverbs 17:22).
