Death. Who can truly be prepared for its day? When
Death. Who can truly be prepared for its day? When you get the call that your loved one or family member is not doing well you don't really have the time to think about the ""what if's"" too much or your last conversation with them. You're busy trying to rush to be with them in their last moments before they depart from this world. Life is a journey not a final destination. If you live each day with hate or regret then you choose to be in misery. Live each day with purpose and realize it may be your last. Learn to realize what's truly important. If something is on your bucket list to accomplish, find a way to do it. Don't wait. Make an opportunity for yourself and don't wait for it to be handed to you.

I have been a nurse for over ten years but no one can truly prepare you for the death of a loved one. I got the frantic call from my dads wife early morning October 6th that EMS was called and were taking my dad to the ER from his rehabilitation center. What came next was something that I wasn't exactly trained nor prepared for as a nurse. Palliative/Hospice care. The oh but ugly words I had heard so often working in the CVICU. It was different for me this time. The reality of an incurable illness one that had progressed silently without my father acknowledging to me or my sister. Oh sure I've witnessed plenty of death in my career. Some accounts are more vividly present. Now it was different, it was my family member needing this care. Due to my father living in a rural area, I knew that it would ultimately be me providing this care for him with the help of my sister and his wife. I must admit that providing hospice care for my father has been one of the toughest challenges I've ever taken on. I was trained to save lives and heal not allow natural death. I kept thinking intubate, ventilate and hydrate. I had no equipment to monitor his heart rate, oxygen level or no labs to let me know what was going on with my patient, my dad. Oh sure I could take a pulse and count respirations but I wanted to be a better detective and to somehow relieve my mind of when he would pass. I wanted to help and do more and yet felt helpless without my cardiac monitors, X-rays, lab values and team of physicians to work with. The course of the next several days turned into additional days and then a week. I've watched him in agony and pain despite the sublingual medications I was administering. Each day brought about new challenges in getting him to a ""comfortable"" state. It was almost to much to bear. I kept my focus on Phil 4:13. We can do all things through Christ that gives us strength. I prayed constantly asking God to take him home. My dad got saved right before his health declined. My dad went to heaven on October 24th. I find comfort in knowing I will see my father again. Thanks to the many friends that stopped by to visit my dad and the people that called to check on us before he passed. I sincerely appreciate your kindness and prayers.
