Dorothy P. Appleton, a long-time resident of Clark County, has passed away following a short illness on February 6, 2017, four days short of her 89th birthday. She is survived by a sister, Judy Jones, her two children, David and Dee, as well as nine grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great grandchildren. She was with family when she passed quietly in her sleep on Monday evening. Born in Hopkinton, Massachusetts in 1928, she married her husband George nineteen years later in Toledo, Ohio, and the family eventually moved to southern Nevada in 1963. She obtained her bachelor's degree at UNLV, was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and taught cosmetology at the then Vo-Tech School for many years. She dabbled in several hobbies over the years, including, among others, knitting, ceramics, painting, music, and genealogy. Her home was always filled with pets; in addition to her beloved cats, other non-human residents of her home over the years included dogs, rabbits, mice, pet garter snakes (despite her very deep aversion to all snakes), guppy fish, and a desert tortoise. With her husband, she spent time prospecting in Butte Valley, making friends with some of the residents in the area, and for many years the couple owned a plot of land in Maine on which they built a small home to which they regularly returned for the milder summers there. She was a member of the Society of Mayflower Descendants and the American Rosie the Riveter Association (during WWII, she worked in a hat factory which made caps for women workers and woolen sleeping bags for the military). True to her New England roots, she was thrifty, self-reliant, generally uncomplaining. Indeed, many of those who knew her in her final years have remarked that if she ever complained, you knew that it was really serious! She shared willingly, and loved visiting with family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all those she has left behind.
