Douglas Mark Schroder, 79, of Las Vegas, passed away June 12, 2010.
Doug was born July 12, 1930, in Burlington, Iowa, and was a 52year resident of Nevada.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Schroder father and mother, Otto and Hazel Schroder and brothers, Jack and Dean Schroder.
Doug is survived by his son, Bryan Schroder daughter, Cheryl Vela grandchildren, Erik Vela, Mariah Vela and Jack Schroder and companion, Margaret Wilson.
Doug lived a long, full life, starting as a farm boy in Augusta, Iowa. After graduating from Denmark Iowa High School in 1948, he served four years in the Air Force, seeing Germany and learning to ski. He returned to the U.S. to attend the University of Iowa before following his brothers and becoming an operating engineer. In 1956, he married Marilyn Cackley of Keokuk, Iowa, and two years later they moved to Las Vegas.
Professionally, Doug made a Significant mark on the Las Vegas valley. He started as heavy equipment operator, advanced to become a foreman, and later in his career served as a job superintendent. His final projects were the main Clark County wastewater treatment plant and Lake Las Vegas. However, the greatest joy in his life was his family. He was proud that both of his children grew up to be contributing citizens, and loved the time he spent with his grandchildren, Erik, Mariah, and Jack.
After his wife Marilyn passed away in 1996, Doug turned to his friends and family for support, and was lucky to reunite with Margaret Wilson, a high school classmate who still lived in Iowa. This allowed him to live his retirement years in both Las Vegas and Iowa with a loving companion, and as the muchloved patriarch of a lively extended family. The other great love of his retirement was his motorcycle, a black Honda Gold Wing. Dougs twowheeled steed provided an opportunity for travel, but most importantly connected him with a great group of friends.
Finally, Doug was a strong member of his church. For many years, he was a loyal member of First United Methodist Church in downtown Las Vegas, serving as both an usher and a trustee. After First United closed its doors, Doug moved to Heritage United Methodist Church, again serving as a trustee.
Whether as a father, grandfather, uncle, or great friend, Doug graced the lives of many, and will be greatly missed.
