Evangeline Bernardino Cabarrus

June 3, 1935 — January 3, 2021

She was a loving friend, sister, wife of one, and mother to many. It was hard to fathom her not ever being here on earth, but that day has come. Evangeline Bernardino Cabarrus passed away on January 3rd, 2021 in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 85.

“Vangie", her preferred nickname, was born on June 3rd, 1935 to parents, Juan B. Bernardino and Elizabeth Rider in the Philippines. As a child, she survived the Japanese occupation of the Philippines and helped raise her two younger sisters. She also developed a love for cooking and playing piano. She married Ernesto Tan Cabarrus, and together they grew into a family of twelve! Yes, they had ten children! Eventually, the family made their way to the United States and settled into a suburb of Chicago, where both Vangie and Ernesto raised their family and fostered many friendships. Vangie was such a social butterfly. She couldn’t refuse a party and probably baked a cake for the occasion, tapping into her baking experience when she operated her own bakery back in the Philippines. As the children grew and started their own families, the decision was made to move somewhere warmer upon their retirement. Las Vegas was a place that Vangie could enjoy great food, watch the local entertainment, and socialize with family and friends.

She lived a great, full life. We miss her so much already. Ernesto, Vangie’s husband, predeceased her back in 2006. Vangie is survived by her ten children and their spouses, Ernesto Jr. Cabarrus (Edna), Juan Cabarrus, Teresa Cabarrus, Cristina Lozada (Jean Pierre), Conchita Segovia (Pedro), Ramona DeLeon (Herman), Jaime Cabarrus, Eliza Cabarrus, Gloria Cabarrus, and Cecilia Culbert (Gabriel). She is also survived by sisters Ramona B. Kuizon, & Josefina B. Whitmore, her uncle Atty. Benjamin B. Bernardino, nine grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
