Chief Petty Officer MS, George Noel Rooney Sr., USN, Retired; died on Tuesday, February 3, 2015 due to cardiac arrest. Mr. Rooney was a resident of Las Vegas, NV for 8 years and was 72 at the time of his death.
Mr. George Rooney is predeceased by his parents, William & Margaret Rooney; and brothers, Paul S. Rooney, Peter J. Rooney, Patrick J. Rooney, and Joseph F. Rooney. George is survived by his loving wife, Margarita P. Rooney; a brother, William G. Rooney Jr. (Barbara) of FL; three children, Shirley P. Carmona-Finifrock (Bryan) of IL, Armando Carmona Jr. of NV, and George Noel Rooney Jr. (Tisha) of NV; six grandchildren, Jonathan, Robert, Krystal (Eric), Sebastian, Roxanne, and Katharyn; and four great grandchildren, Madilyn, Zayda, Rozilyn, and Lincoln.
George was born on December 9, 1942 in the small town of Morristown, New Jersey. He was the fifth child out of six boys. During his boyhood, he often dreamt of exploring the world outside of the little community of Morristown. Upon his graduation from Morristown High School in 1960, he enlisted in the United States Navy to begin his journey into the unknown. After 10 years of learning and developing his naval career, he was deployed to fight in the Vietnam War.
In 1974, George Rooney had met his soulmate and the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, Margarita M. Per. They had married on March 1, 1975. He continued to prosper in the United States Navy while providing for his wife and three children. He achieved the rank of Chief Petty Officer and retired honorably in 1981 after 21 years of service with a Purple Heart along with many other awards and accolades.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy, George attended Miramar College in San Diego, CA to study child development. In 1984, George acquired a position with the United States Post Office, where he would stay until his retirement in 1999.
Over the next decade, George saw his family grow with the addition of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Along with his wife, he relocated to Las Vegas, NV to be closer to his family. He filled his time with the joy of his grandkids, going to bingo (Suncoast Casino), reading, cooking, games & gameshows, and lending his time to organizations such as American Legion, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.), and Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).
George Rooney had spent the last months, weeks, days, and final moments with the love and enjoyment of his immediate family and friends. He had gone from being a small town boy to becoming a naval hero, and left this world as a man of integrity, a man of success, and a man who has shared all he had to give with those who have had the privilege of knowing him.
