GILES JOSEPH KRUSE, 79, devoted husband and father passed away suddenly and peacefully on May 14th, 2021 in Henderson, Nevada. Born on December 23,1941 in Dyersville, Iowa, he was the son of Leander “Moose” and Margaret (Milbert) Kruse. Early in his childhood, the family moved from Iowa to Chicago where he spent his youth. He enjoyed summers in Iowa with his cousins and extended family. He graduated from St. Leo High School in Chicago. He attended Loras College in Dubuque, IA and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts. After college, he remained in the Chicago area. He earned his Master’s degree in English from DePaul University. Although he initially contemplated the priesthood, Giles found his calling to serve through teaching high school English. His first teaching position was at Chicago Vocational High School in Chicago, Illinois and soon after he found a permanent position at George Washington High School where he met his beloved Rosemarie, also a teacher at the school. He was a dedicated teacher throughout his 30-year career and was beloved by his students and fellow colleagues at George Washington.
In retirement, Giles and Rosemarie relocated to Henderson, NV where they enjoyed an escape from the Chicago winters. As an English teacher and amateur writer, Giles had a love of reading and could always be found with a wide selection of detective and mystery novels on his Kindle. Giles was an avid sports fan, with a particular love of hockey and horse racing. He loved learning about new topics and had a wonderful curiosity about all things in life - upon reading or hearing about a place or event in the news or in a book, he would immediately look it up elsewhere to learn more. His amazing memory allowed him quick access to many facts and contributed to his delightful jokes and storytelling. Giles was fascinated by games and was a student of probabilities. He was always quick to calculate your odds as needed on the fly. Lady Luck was definitely on his side, as he enjoyed a long retirement full of reading, travel, friendship, and time with his treasured family.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Rosemarie (Brodzik) Kruse, of Henderson, NV, and devoted daughter Amy Kruse and her husband Tom Clemence of Annapolis, MD. Giles was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Catherine (Kruse) Shuemaker and brother Lawrence Kruse.
Condolences may be sent to Giles Kruse c/o Davis Funeral Home at 6200 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89119 or www.davisfuneralservices.com. The family will hold a private celebration of his life.
