The beautiful life of James Edgar Lewis began on March 18, 1953 at Huntsville Memorial Hospital in Huntsville, TX to John Lee Lewis Sr. and Nellie Mae Madison.
Since James was the only child for several years his cousin, Helen, remembers the family calling him ""Baby Lewis"" because he was the youngest family member at that time. At the tender age of six, James confessed God as his personal Lord and Savior; he was baptized at Jasper Missionary Baptist Church by the honorable Reverend L.R. Harrison in New Waverley, TX.
Born and raised in Texas, James was educated in the Texas school system and graduated in 1971 from New Waverly High School in Walker County, TX. Later that fall, on October 12, 1971, James joined the United States Air Force to serve his country. He remained in the U.S. Air Force until November 1, 1973 and continued serving in the U.S. Air Force Reserve for several years.
His second mother Laura Lewis remembers James as always being a very kind, polite, intelligent, soft spoken and loveable son. James had a love for sports especially boxing and football. He loved working on cars and spending time with his family.
James was a very hard worker in everything he did. Before moving to Colorado in 1978 James worked with his father and brothers bailing hay and raising cows in Texas, along with obtaining his Commercial Operators License as a commercial driver in 1977. After moving to Colorado, James worked for Coolers Porcelain Company as a forklift driver for many years until he became employed with Ritz Cab Company. With hard work and determination, James was able to obtain and own two cab cars. He also remained on as a dedicated employee and continued to help assist in dispatch and helping the mechanics with maintenance issues on the cabs. James continued to work many years in the Denver Metropolitan transit system.
It appears James came to Las Vegas back in the mid 2000's where he worked at a convenient store for seven years. Unfortunately, James was laid off and at that time became homeless. Although he lost everything, he remained a hard worker in a forgotten community getting up early every morning riding his bike to collect cans and bottles to survive. To his new community family, he was known as ""Pops"" and remained a kind and hard-working person.
The precious life of James Edgar Lewis was suddenly taken away on February 2, 2018. He may have lost touch with his family but that did not stop them from loving, thinking, and looking for him endlessly.
James proceeds in death by his grandparents: John and Jessie Leah Lewis; Lewis and Edith Green; his mother Nellie Mae Madison and Step-father Arthur Madison; and one brother Elbert McDaniels.
He leaves to cherish the memory and love of his parents John Sr. and Laura Lewis (TX); two children Oneida Lewis-Baker (NV) and Edgar Lewis (CO); four grandchildren Andre Lewis (CO), Kenneth Lewis-Bridges, Dove Lewis and Cassandra Daniels (all of NV); two brothers Jareld Lewis (Lorraine) and John Lewis Jr. (Calandra) (all of TX), along with a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
