SMOOTH SAILING UNDER FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS JAMES VICTOR UNDERWOOD. Honoring and celebrating the life of James Victor Underwood lovingly known as Jim, Jimmy and Uncle Jim.
Jim passed away on February 16, 2025 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada at the age of 87 years old. Jim is originally from Sinajana, Guam and retired in San Diego, CA., after a combined service in the United States Navy and the Civil Service for a total of 42 years. He later moved to Las Vegas in 2005 where he lived for 20 years.
Petty Officer First Class James V. Underwood was deployed on the USS Enterprise (VA145) and a member of the ATTACK SQUADRON 145, as well as on the USS Iwo Jima (S6 Division). After serving 22 years in the Navy, he retired but later came out of retirement and began his federal Civil Service career at the Fleet and Industrial Supply Center (FISC) at the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. He retired again after 20 more years .
Jim was recognized during his Navy career for receiving the Navy Good Conduct Medal (5th Award), the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation-Gallantry Cross. For FISC he received an Incentive Award for his contribution to improve efficiency and economy of operation in addition to being awarded the Certificate of Achievement for his generous contribution he made through the Combined Federal Campaign.
Jim will be remembered by the many friends he has made over the years growing up in Guam, his career in the U.S. Navy and Civil Service, and at the GVR Casino. His legacy will live on through his family as he was always cheerful and supportive of them, and enjoyed being a generous and loving brother to his three younger brothers and his two sisters. He had a unique style that rarely changed over the years. He liked to wear his jewelry and showed a little flash in his clothing. He was proud of his military and civil service career spanning 42 years and although not outwardly religious, he believed in God and took great care not to be a burden to anyone. He retired gracefully and went to the casino regularly and lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed eating his favorite island foods at Island Sushi and Red Rice because both restaurants were in walking distance. His favorite candy is the Three Musketeers and his favorite soda was Coca Cola of which he kept fully stocked in his fridge.

"Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him". 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
