Jewel Dixon

January 20, 1934 — August 13, 2022

Las Vegas, NV

Jewel Leborn Dixon, Jr. peacefully passed away on August 13, 2022, with the love of his life Patricia Flick, daughter Elise Taylor and Elise’s husband Chris by his side.

From picking cotton in the fields of Arkansas to owning the Barcelona Casino, Jewel epitomized the rags to riches life that America offers.  Jewel always attacked life with a “fly high” attitude, especially when he was in the cockpit of his Cessna 210.  He enjoyed regaling an audience with his country witticisms while nursing a glass of red wine and making up nicknames for everyone he met (GoGo, Flicker, Potsy, Sunshine, Muleherin, Smiles, Pretty Woman, Silver Fox, Patsy, Farmer Boy).

Jewel was born in Blytheville, Arkansas to Jewel Leborn Dixon and Nellie Florence Gatewood on January 20th, 1934.  He attended Memphis Tech High School and continued to Memphis State University for two years.  Jewel decided at this point of his life to pursue the military and entered the Navy Post Graduate school in Monterey, CA and earned his bachelor’s degree in international science and a minor in mathematics.

After spending 23 years in the United States Navy and serving during the Vietnam War, Jewel retired as a Lieutenant Commander.  With his constant drive for success and tools he had learned to this point of his life, Jewel switched his focus to becoming a successful entrepreneur.  He started in the trucking business with Jewel Fruit and Produce and Jewel Trucking.  After growing this business, he decided to try something new and switched his focus to real estate.  He worked at several agencies and then became his own broker and a member of the Las Vegas Real Estate Board.  Finding great deals and investing always gave Jewel a huge smile.  He went on to build the Craigmont Villas and the Barcelona Motel and Restaurant.  He was always looking for new business opportunities and after a seven-year fight with the city and the gaming commission, Jewel was finally able to open the Barcelona Casino.  Jewel loved his casino, employees, and all of those that came to spend time at the hotel and casino.  Jewel’s last business adventure and the one that still is thriving today was when he built Nellis Gardens Luxury Apartments.  He loved going into work and Jewel especially loved his Nellis Gardens family.

Jewel is survived by Patricia Flick (Patsy), Elise and Chris Taylor, Joel Dixon, Jon Flick, Terri Doughty, George (Potsy) and Marilyn Dixon, Hayley and Shane Stegen, Tanner Morrison, Chris and Eliza Morrison, Katie Morrison, Delaney Moskovko, Josie Doughty, Paige Doughty, Capri and Brixton Stegen, Zayne and Shiloh Morrison, Beckam Moskovko, and Arya Moskovko.
