In Loving Memory of Larry Mertikas
February 28, 1943 – January 28, 2025
Larry Mertikas, 81, of Henderson, Nevada, passed away on January 28, 2025. He was born on February 28, 1943, in Piraeus, Greece, to Gus and Sophie (Loizos) Mertikas.
Larry came to the USA as a young child and was proud to become a naturalized citizen at the age of 12. From childhood and for many years into adulthood, Larry worked in his family’s restaurants, the Neptune/L&M Diners in Neptune, New Jersey. Larry also dedicated over 25 years of his life to teaching high school students at Neptune High School, Neptune, New Jersey. He had a gentle, encouraging, and kind nature that made him always one of the most popular teachers in his school. For several years during his teaching career, Larry was the president of the teachers’ union in Neptune Township, New Jersey.
Larry loved and cherished his late wife, Ellen (O’Neil) and was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. His marriage to Ellen was a testament to respect, devotion, and true partnership. Larry loved to spend time with his family, and also enjoyed horse racing, watching football games, traveling, and walking on the beach. He was one of the most decent, kind-hearted men you would ever meet, and he led by example with his gentle strength.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Gus and Sophie (Loizos) Mertikas; and his beloved wife, Ellen (O’Neil). He leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish his memory: his daughter Laurie (Tony), his sons Larry, Tim (Theresa), and John (Heather), and his grandchildren Sarah, T.J., Tony, Mackenzie, Timmy, Donovan, Jake, and Julia and his great grandson Jordan.
