Leroy Joseph “Lee” Appelboom, of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on May 1, 2020, in Las Vegas.
Lee was born in The Bronx, NY, to Harry and Nora Wiener Appelboom on August 2, 1929.
He attended City College of New York and had a professional career as a technical writer for various engineering firms on Department of Defense contracts throughout the northeastern US. Upon retiring in 1998 along with his brother and lifelong companion, Benjamin “Ben” Appelboom, they moved to Las Vegas to take up their joint lifelong avocation of gambling, a skill at which they were very adept. In fact, they were so well known at several Strip and local casinos, that at least a couple of the more well-known establishments were known to have invited them to never return to their card tables. In fact, his last documented wager was on Duke to win the 2020 NCAA championship.
Lee was preceded in death by his parents and devoted brother, Ben. He is survived by several cousins, his constant companion for the past several years Edith “Edie” Geier, and with a notable reputation in the local gambling world.
Lee was laid to rest on May 7, 2020, alongside Ben at the Davis Memorial Park on Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada, with Rabbi Craig Rosenstein officiating.
If you wish to donate in his memory, he would have preferred it to be either to your local heart association or cancer research organization.
