Louis Howard, beloved husband, father, Opa, and friend, passed away in Las Vegas, NV on November 29, 2022 at age 88. He was born on July 13, 1936 in St Louis, MO to parents Edna Eoff and Hagar Howard.
Lou joined the military at the young age of 17; he served in both the Marine Corps and Army before retiring after 23 years. He participated in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, earning a Purple Heart and his favorite title: The Gunny. After his military retirement, he went on to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons for an additional 20 years. Along the way he supported his church(s), joined the local Disabled Veterans (DAV), tended his abundant roses, traveled when he could find a willing companion, and enjoyed his ever growing family. Lou had a knack for "being there" when there were significant family events, shared his love of fishing by teaching each of his kids to fish, and never passed up an opportunity to take the grandkids for ice cream.
In 1958 while serving on embassy duty for the Marine Corps, Lou married Ruth Alsleben. Together they maneuvered a military-war torn life, raised 3 children, set up homes in several countries, and were married for 26 years before parting ways. After living the bachelor life and sometime after moving to Las Vegas for his Federal Bureau of Prison job, he met Gerda Wilson. Taking multiple trips to Europe and around the U.S together, she was his sweetheart for many years before eventually marrying in December 2016. They were married for the remaining 5 years of his life.
Louis was survived by his wife Gerda Wilson (subsequently passed December 3, 2022), former wife Ruth Alsleben, all three children: Susie Jager (Las Vegas), Peter Howard and wife Terri (San Diego), Julie Medel and husband Mick (Spokane). He is also survived by 1 sibling, 9 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and a host of many long-time friends and military brothers. Louis is predeceased by both parents Edna Eoff and Hager Howard as well as 5 siblings. ~A Final Salute~
