Mary Elizabeth Hatch made her entrance into the world on June 12, 1932, in Cedar City, Utah, the seventh child of nine born to Amos Chester Hatch and Sarah Edna Stohl. She grew up in nearby Parowan, Utah, except when she was 10 and they lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming for two years while her father was serving in World War II.
Mary graduated from Parowan High School, where her father was the principal, and her History and Ceramics teacher. She went on to attend college in Cedar City for two years and then transferred to BYU. It was there that she was set up with Chesley Davies. They ditched the group to go dancing and the rest is history.
Chesley proposed at Thanksgiving in 1953, right before he went to Pensacola, Florida, for Naval pilot training. After an 18 month engagement, due to his training, they were married in the St. George Temple on May 7, 1955.
She then went with him to Pensacola until they shipped him off to the Westpack in the Philippine Sea. Mary stayed in Parowan for the 7 months he was gone and delivered their first child, Laurie, in nearby Cedar City. When Chesley returned, they moved to Pearl Harbor Naval Base, Hawaii.
After Chesley got out of the Navy, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, where he went to Medical School at the University of Utah and enlisted in the Air Force his Senior year. During that time Brady was born.
Their first Air Force assignment sent them to San Antonio, Texas, followed by Boston, Massachusetts; back to San Antonio; Mesa, Arizona, while Chesley served in Vietnam Nam, and there Melisa was added to the family; Duluth, Minnesota, where Matt was born; Biloxi, Mississippi; Ft. Worth, Texas; then Las Vegas, Nevada, where Erik completed their family.
She enjoyed traveling to new places around the United States and the world. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served diligently in many callings and responsibilities in the Church around the country.
Mary and Chesley served a mission in Los Angeles after their children were all adults, from January 2002-December 2003. Upon their return, they moved to Henderson, where she passed away peacefully on July 17, 2024, after battling 3 different cancers during the past 3 years.
Mary was a loving, kind, patient and humble woman, wife, mother, grandmother and “Grandma Great”. Her posterity adores her and we will all miss her gentle kindness, love and great sense of humor. She was respectful and charitable to all, and was blessed with many friends and associates who love her as well. She lived for and loved her family, friends, and others. Serving others was her mantra. She will be greatly missed and remembered, but our solace is that she is now reunited with her parents and siblings: Chester (Colleen), Margaret (Howard) Knight, David (Mary Lu), Louise (Leon) Robinson, Hazel (Gordon) Whitney and Joseph; a brother-in-law, Thomas Lake, and a grandson, Michael.
Mary is survived by her husband, Chesley; her children and their spouses: Laurie (Lee) Koelliker, Brady (Michele), Melisa, Matthew (Holly), and Erik (Patrice); 20 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren; her siblings: Oleen (Clara Mae) and Helen Lake.
