After interning in Baltimore, MD with several of her University of Philippines, Diliman classmates, Mercedes (or fondly known as Boots by her family and friends) trained in General Anesthesia in Joliet, IL and completed a fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology at the Children’s Hospital of Chicago. Although she did not discover new medical cures or procedures, she worked at the Children’s Hospital from 1969 to 1975 and practiced General Anesthesia in Joliet, IL until she retired in 1997 due to various cervical and lumbar discectomy and fusion surgeries. During her retirement she practiced acupuncture. She retired to Florida in 2000 and lived in Venice, FL until she relocated to Las Vegas, NV in 2005.
In her free time Mercedes was an avid tennis player, golfer, and enjoyed biking, hiking, and jogging. However, due to physical limitations in recent years, her hobbies were limited to cooking, baking, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles, watching tennis and golf on television, and playing an occasional slot machine or two.
Mercedes is survived by her sisters Remedios Raymundo (Ben Raymundo), Anecia Abustan (Godofredo Abustan), Socorro Franca Todd (Jeffrey Todd), her brother Floro Alcantara (Eva Alcantara), and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
