Pete Stojanovich, age 96, of Las Vegas, passed away on June 5th, 2023 in his Las Vegas home. Pete was born in Colorado to Trivun and Diana Stojanovich on April 10th, 1927. When he was 2 years old, his family moved to Ely, Nevada and after his father passed away he began working at the young age of 10, building railroad tracks. Pete attended White Pine High School but was only able to complete his freshman year before enlisting into the U.S Coast Guard at the age of 16 during WW2. He was a Gunner's Mate 2nd class on the USS LST-26, a Navy tank landing ship. He was involved in several landing missions all over the Pacific Theater of Operations.
After WW2 he worked in the mines in Ruth, logging camps, shipyards, and worked in a survey crew all through California. He moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he married his first wife Barbara Gary, later he married his second wife Barbara Lynn Dunn. Pete began a long career in the gaming industry. He started out as a dealer at the El Cortez and Riviera, he became a floorman at the Sands, a Shift Manager at the Four Queens and Desert Inn. He later retired in the mid-90’s from the Flamingo Hilton.
Pete had many talents even with his limited education, he was able to fully restore cars, build anything including a home. Even at 96 he was able to put in flooring while using his walker and cane. He had a personality larger than life, he was well known and respected in his community, he loved to throw extravagant parties. For Serbian Orthodox Christmas he would cook pigs, turkeys and lamb in the backyard on a BBQ spit he built. Homemade sauerkraut, and smoked sausage made from a refrigerator he converted into a smoker. Pete had created an unbelievable handmade Christmas display outside of his home that was like no other. It was the first of its kind during that time period, he was featured on the news and won contests. He was very involved with the American Legion Post 8, and still enjoyed having a cocktail with friends. Pete was truly one of a kind and he will never be forgetten!
