Philip "Phil" Groenewald

September 17, 1964 — June 13, 2015

Philip (Phil) Groenewald, 50, of Las Vegas, NV passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 13, 2015. Born on September 17, 1964 in Seattle, Washington, Phil spent his childhood in St Paul, Minnesota. He joined the US Air Force in 1985 and had assignments in Florida, Michigan, South Korea, North Dakota and lastly, Nevada, at Nellis Air Force Base. After serving honorably in the US Air Force, Phil retired from active service and became a defense contract employee, having worked at Battlespace Flight Services as a Quality Assurance Inspector since August, 2007.

Phil had a gentle and loving soul, and enjoyed nothing more than making a friend or loved one's life a little bit easier, especially when things were a little tough. Phil was a fair and kind person, the type of person who would observe from the shadows and tell you if you were in the wrong, or if you hurt someone. When he did, it was done with respect and in a sincere caring manner, never deceitful. He was well respected by his friends and co-workers, who sought his counsel whenever they had a problem. His zest for life and sarcastic sense of humor will be greatly missed.

Phil is preceded in death by his son, Andrew, his parents, Leon & Donna Groenewald (nee Seymour), and his brother from another mother, Timothy W. Myrice. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Michelle Wilson of Las Vegas, NV, and their children, Matt and Leah, of Las Vegas, and Russell, of St Charles, Missouri; his sister, Barbra & Arnold Hazlewood, and their children, Becca, Katherine, Jacob, Lexi, and Elliot of Rice Lake, Wisconsin. His other brother from another mother, Brian & Michelle Parker, and their sons, Ethan and Henry of Troy, Illinois. Caryn Nave, Timothy Myrice's widow, and Tim's children, Marissa Geiger and Trey Myrice of the Fort Wayne, Indiana area; his (step)mother, Viola Sveen of Woodbury, Minnesota; step siblings, Sue & Tom Bull, of Mesa, Arizona, Cathy & Kenny Meloy, and their son, Owen of Woodbury, Minnesota, Rick & Cindy Sveen, and their sons, Tyler and Nicholas, also of Woodbury, Minnesota; his parents- in law, Brian & Judy Wilson (nee Temple) of Sequim, Washington; Sisters in-law, Katy Wilson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Joanne & Steve Soukup, and their children, Kayleigh and Cullen of Buda, Texas; brother in-law, Mark & Tina Wilson, and their daughters Shelby, Nikki and Kylie of Milford, Michigan; his other nieces and nephews, Austin, Sarah, Ben, Dustin and Donna.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, Nevada 89119. If friends desire, memorial contributions would be appreciated, and may be sent to Michelle Wilson, PO Box 620151, Las Vegas, NV 89110.
