William Randall Skaggs, 70, died September 2 at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. Skaggs was born May 31, 1942 to Lillian Mick and Murl Skaggs. The only child of sharecroppers, Mr. Skaggs grew up in the rural farming community of Hammonsville, Kentucky. He graduated from Munfordville High School where he exclled in athletics, earning 12 varsity letters in his 4 years.
Mr. Skaggs married Judy Lane Miles, his wife of 38 years, in June of 1963. Together, they raised a family of four children: William Kerry Skaggs of Las Vegas, Nevada Jason Kelly Skaggs of New Albany, Indiana Randi Lane Skaggs Serchuk of Louisville, Kentucky, and Nora Bethany Gocking of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.
Mr. Skaggs early career featured elected service as Deputy Sheriff of Hart County, Kentucky, a factory job with Phillip Morris, and a successful stint as a salesman and later Distric Manager for a life insurance company. Later in life he became selfemployed by owning and operating a restaurant, farming, as well as breeding and owning several thoroughbred race horses.
Mr. Skaggs is known as a very successful coach of Mens fastpitch softball. His teams won 6 Kentucky state championships in the 1970s, including 4 championships in a row from 19721976. He was inducted into the innaugral class of the Kentucky Softball Hall of Honor in 1983. Skaggs also coached several youth baseball teams to county championships.
Mr. Skaggs moved to Las Vegas in 2001 where he enjoyed success as a professional poker player and sports handicapper. There he met his longtime companion, Arvi Cabulong. Together, they spent his later years visiting and hosting friends and family, traveling, and passionately following his beloved Kentucky Wildcats.
Mr. Skaggs was preceded in death by his Parents, Lillian and Murl. He is survived by his companion, Arvi his children Arvis sons Jorge Bertran and Jose Cabulong and his grandchildren Daniel Robert West, Claire Elisabeth Skaggs, Bethany Lane Gocking and Stella Rae Serchuk.
