Ricardo Manalo, age 74, passed away at Mountain View Hospital, Las Vegas, NV on February 20, 2019. The third of three boys, he was born on October 19, 1944 in Rosales, Pangasinan, Philippines to Urbano and Basilia Manalo.
Ricardo attended Rosales Elementary School and in 1956, at the age of 12, was brought to San Francisco, CA where he continued his education at Gratton Elementary School. He attended Polytechnic High School, then City College of San Francisco.
On March 31, 1964, at the age of 19, Ricardo enlisted in the United States Marines. After serving a short time in Spain, he was deployed to Vietnam where he performed the duties of "" battery man"" or ""cannoneer"" in field artillery. On September 1, 1967 he received the rank of E-5 Sergeant and went on to complete 16 field artillery operations before ending his military career on March 30, 1970. During his time in the Marines, Ricardo was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Vietnam Service Medal, and Rifleman Marksman Badge.
Ricardo returned to San Francisco, finding his first job at a book binding company but his tenure there was short-lived. He was hired as a pipefitter by BAE Systems, whom he worked for his entire career. He started at San Francisco's Hunter's Point Shipyard then moved to Mare Island in Vallejo, CA where he performed repairs on naval ships and submarines. In 1995, Ricardo left Mare Island for San Diego, CA and in 2001, he moved to Honolulu, HI where he continued to work until finally retiring in 2010. In 2017, he moved to Las Vegas, NV to ""try something different"" and to see if he could breathe better there than in Hawaii.
Ricardo was known as a kind and compassionate person. He was very selfless, always willing to help anyone in need. He had a witty sense of humor and a warm, loving smile that will be missed dearly. He loved watching sports, enjoyed western and science-fiction movies and gambled occasionally for recreation. He was very proud that he perfected his cheesecake amongst other specialties in his repertoire.
Ricardo is predeceased by his parents Urbano and Basilia, step-father Sergio Jacob, brother Avelino, and son Angell. He is survived by his sons, Ricky Jr. and Noel, daughter-in-law Ruthie, step-daughters Valerie and Melody, whom he considered his own daughters, grandchildren Jessica, Skylar, Braden and Chance, brother Roberto Manalo, Sr., numerous nieces, nephews and grandkids, extended family and dear friends.
Funeral Services are as follows: viewing at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City, Ca 94014, March 6th from 4pm to 9pm, March 7th from 3pm to 9pm. A burial mass will be held at 11am on March 8th at the Church of the Epiphany, 827 Vienna Street, San Francisco, CA 94112 (meet at Duggan's Serra Mortuary at 9am). Burial site is at Holy Cross Cemetery, Daly City, CA, Star of the Sea (Veteran's side) at 1230pm.
