Richard T. Whitey Mellon, 91, was born in Philippi, West Virginia and passed quietly early Wednesday morning, May 15, 2013 after a 2 12 week battle with pneumonia. He was a 53year resident of Nevada.
Though barely out of high school, Whitey enlisted in the US Army Air Corps and served as a photo reconnaissance pilot in Europe during World War II. After the war, he married and moved to southern California where he worked in the construction trades. There he became an active member of Tujunga Masonic Lodge 592 where he held the office of Chaplain. Whitey was also a member of the Royal Arch Chapter, the Knights Templar, and in 1958 he became a member of the Al Malaikah Temple of Shriners.
In 1960, Whitey moved his family to Las Vegas where he worked as an electrician and contractor until his retirement. He enjoyed outdoor sports such as hunting and fishing, boating and horseback riding. Most of his weekends were spent at his vacation home on the river in Bullhead City, Arizona, and he always had a dog
After 53 years of marriage, Whiteys wife Jean was taken by cancer in 1998. However, good fortune brought him a lovely widow who shared his same zest for life. Whitey and Barbara were married in 2000 and lived happily together for 12 12 years until his demise.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara daughter, Joy FarrellLong stepchildren, Steven Williams, Sharon Oakley and Virginia McCallister grandsons, Richard and Christian Farrell greatgrandchildren, Bailey, Sean, Megan, and Lilly Farrell, all of Henderson and Las Vegas sister, Alice Kruskamp nephew, John Kruskamp and niece, Barbara Maloof, all of SunlandTujunga, California and finally, longtime close friend, George Brajkovich of Horseshoe Bend, Idaho.
We who loved him are honoring his memory by celebrating his life.
