ROBERT C. COMEAU

The great football coach Eddie Robinson said, Coaching is a profession of love. You cant coach people unless you love them. He could have been describing Robert Charles Comeau May 6, 1935 to November 8, 2014.

Robert loved to coach he loved to teach. He loved the people he taught and coached. The only things he loved more were being a husband, father and grandfather.

Robert was born in Hoxie, Kansas, the first son of Fremond and Lucilla Desmarteau Comeau. On the Midwestern plains, he learned the value of hard work and responsibility. His high school yearbook described him as An athletic boy, a regular guy a friend to all and seldom shy.

He excelled in school, and in all the sports he played, and earned a scholarship to study and play ball at St. Benedicts College in Atchison, Kansas. He graduated in 1957 with a degree in Physical Education. He later earned a Masters Degree from the University of Colorado.

One of Roberts first coaching jobs was in Denver, Colorado, where he met Marjorie Rutt. They fell in love and were married in Campbell, Nebraska on June 2, 1962. They built a wonderful life together and a loving home for their three daughters, Cindy, Vicki and Julie.

Coaching brought Robert and Marge to Las Vegas in 1964 and they stayed there for the next fifty years. Robert taught and coached at UNLV, Orr Junior High School and Sunset High School. To support his growing family, he also worked extra jobs at the El Cortez Sports Book and the Summer Youth baseball program.

He touched the lives of thousands of students. It was common, when you were out with him, to have a former student approach and warmly say, Hi Mr. Comeau When he retired from teaching in 1994, he earned his real estate license and helped hundreds of people, many of them former students, realize the Great American dream of owning a home.

Robert was the ultimate UNLV fan, rarely missing a Rebels game and always getting a seat close to the action no matter where his ticket said he was supposed to sit. He enjoyed March Madness, cinnamon rolls, playing cards, golfing and driving his golf cart, working around his lovely Anthem home, spending time with his brothers, sister and their families and meeting and talking to new friends. He spent his retirement years with Marge, enjoying the fruits of all their hard labors, and spoiling his grandchildren Erin OBrien, Megan OBrien, Danny OBrien, Austin Begin and Alison Begin.

Robert lived a wonderful life. In the end, he again showed his outstanding character, courage, hard work and diligence as he fought and endured a horrible disease, with dignity and grace. The disease conquered his body, but never his spirit.

Robert is survived by his wife Marge, daughters Cindy Comeau, Vicki Comeau OBrien husband Mike and Julie Comeau Begin, and his five grandchildren. He also will be greatly missed by his siblings, Carmella Thyfault, Paul and Lynn Comeau, Bernie and Peggy Comeau, Jerry and Mary Comeau, and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, inlaws, and friends.

Robert was a devout Catholic. A Mass will be celebrated for him on Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at 9 am at his parish, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, 2300 Sunridge Heights Parkway, Henderson, Nevada, 89052. Robert will be laid to rest at Davis Funeral Home Memorial Park in Las Vegas, located at 6200 South Eastern Avenue, Las Vegas, Nevada.

In lieu of flowers, Roberts family suggests contributions in his name to the St. Francis of Assisi church building fund, or to the UNLV Runnin Rebels basketball program. To honor his memory, yell Go Rebels, strike up a conversation with a complete stranger and hug someone you love. Rest in Peace Robert. We will always love you and we will never forget you.
