Robert McConnell, 82, of Las Vegas peacefully passed away Tuesday morning January 11, 2012 after a courageous five year battle with Parkinsons and Alzheimers. Bob passed away at his home in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he resided for the last eighteen years with his wife Mattie. He was born on December 26, 1929 in Pensacola, Florida. After graduating from high school he enlisted and served honorably in the United States Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam War. While in the Air Force, Bob and his family had the opportunity to travel and reside in many of the fifty states, and lived abroad in Japan. Bob also dedicated himself to furthering his education and pursued and completed both his Bachelor of Arts and MBA at the age of fiftyseven, and fiftynine respectively. After retirement, he and his wife remained in California and later became a resident of Las Vegas, NV.
Bob was the youngest of four children, born to the late John Cellers and Ethel McConnell. Bob was a loving husband to Mattie McConnell to whom he was married for 61 years, a father to Reggie, Linda, Patrice, Tony Wanda and Kevin Rena and Grandfather to LaVonne, Chrissie, Christopher, Kristina, and Aaron. He was also Great Grandfather to Elijah, Fernando, Christopher, Francesca, and Keyanna and Kaija. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ethel McConnell, as well as his siblings, Angeline Robinson, Harvey and L.C. McConnell, as well as sisterinlaw Selena, niece, Cheryl, and nephews, Adrain, Raymond, and Gerry and great niece Catherine.
He is survived by his wife Mattie, his sister Voncille Bunkley of Pensacola Florida, his niece Sharon Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia as well as his sons, daughter, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great nieces and nephews
Our Dad and Grandfather touched the lives of many people with his warm smile, generosity, and kindness. He cared deeply for his family, manifested by his ability to provide and address any need that surfaced, including financial, emotional, or showing up at little league baseball and football games and graduations. He always made it a point to be there, and be proud.
We are comforted by the fact that Bob asked Jesus Christ into His life to rule and reign and we are blessedly assured that He is at home in heaven with the Father.
