R. Scott Fowler passed away with his family by his side on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, after a year-long battle with AML Leukemia.
Rodney Scott was born to Archie and Hettye Fowler, on April 2, 1942, in Pueblo, Colorado. He had many fun adventures as a young boy such as freight train hopping and riding it back and forth from Frasier to Tabernash at age 5 to play with a friend, hunting arrowheads behind his house, and panning for gold in a nearby stream all while toting around his big .45-70 Trapdoor Springfield that used to belong to his grandfather. (Did I mention he was only 5, 6, and 7 at the time?)
After WWII, Scott and his Mother were members of the Civil Defense Air Patrol, where they would watch for flying enemy aircraft over the skies of Colorado. This was the beginning of his lifelong love of airplanes and all things military. As a young man, he got his pilot license at age 13, and his Armature Radio License (KNOSPU-novice / WA7GIV-general) at 15, both before getting his drivers license. He was able to fly many WWI and WWII planes that were owned by his instructor. He later served in the Air Force where he served in Viet Nam, and then continued on to be an avid collector of old military items such as an army ambulance, gyrocopter, Saracen APC as well as a gatling gun and other military collectables. He worked at the Nevada Test Site, was a reservist in the Las Vegas Sherriff's Department, metro police, and LVMPD. He was an army warrant officer in the Nevada National Guard and Reserves. He belonged to several Las Vegas amateur radio groups such as MARS and 3494 Group and He was a founding member of the HXO HAM Radio Group. He was also a 50 year member of the MVPA (Military Vehicle Preservation Association) and a proud member of the Las Vegas Oasis Chapter. Scott retired after 43 years as a stagehand/soundman on the Las Vegas Strip working the shows for the likes of Elvis, Sinatra and others.
He met the love of his life, and his sister's best friend, on a blind date set up by his mom. He spent the next four months taking the train each weekend from Las Vegas to Salt Lake City to see her until, On October 23, 1965, Mary Alice Howe became his wife.
Scott is survived by his wife Mary Alice Howe and daughter Mary Elizabeth Fowler as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his parents Hettye and Archie Fowler, and sister Shari Harvey (Milt).
There will be a funeral service held at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 9th at the LDS church located at 4340 West Warm Springs Rd, in Las Vegas, Nevada. A light luncheon will be served following the service for friends and family.
