It is with great sadness that the family of Steve Sawchuk, Jr. announce his passing on December 2, 2022, due to a lengthy illness and many health struggles over the past several years.
Steve was born in Chicago, Illinois, on November 6, 1943, to parents Shirley and Steve Sawchuk, Sr. At the age of 12, Steve moved to Miami, Florida, where he was raised and graduated from North Miami High School in 1961 and soon thereafter, joined the Navy and served on the USS Forrestal (the first supercarrier in the world), while stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. After being discharged from the Navy, Steve worked as a professional photographer and continued with his trade even after becoming disabled.
Steve moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1986, where he became very active with the Vietnam Veterans of America becoming a Lifetime Member of VVA Chapter 17, where he held the office of Treasurer as well as the Publisher/Editor of their monthly newsletter.
Steve was a very social, kindhearted, and extremely positive person, never letting a negative thought cross his mind or mouth. His generosity was overwhelming and would give the shirt off his back to anyone he met.
As his health continued to deteriorate, Steve was cared for by a close family friend, Andrea Carlson, and her family for many years. Steve’s family is eternally grateful for their genuine care and friendship of Steve.
Steve was predeceased by his wife, Virginia Sawchuk and parents Shirley and Steve Sawchuk, Sr. Survivors include his daughter Jennifer Sawchuk of Las Vegas, sister Sharon Potter of Texas, niece Kimberly Wilford (Darren) of Reno, NV, cousins Charles Betz (Myrintha Morton) of Illinois and Marsha Sawchuk of Illinois, Aunt Marcia Johnson of Washington and cousins Warren, Gary, Dianna, and David.
Services and Internment, along with his wife Virginia’s ashes, will be held Monday, March 6th at 10:00am at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Boulder City, NV.
