In loving memory of Dr. Virginia Hicks Bakay, who passed away May 25, 2015 at Nathan Aldelson Hospice in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Virginia was born January 22, 1927 to Winnie Cole and Carl Hicks in Newbern Tennessee. Virginia lived and worked in several states but for thirty-seven years she called Las Vegas home. She was a tenured professor of accounting at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas from 1978-1997. Virginia was a dedicated Christian and an active member in several Baptist churches in Las Vegas and Beatty, Nevada.
She was preceded in death by a son Stephen Gatlin. Her surviving family includes Stephen's wife, Deborah Woods Gatlin of Sarasota Florida, his son John Gatlin of Lexington, Kentucky and his daughter Emily Gatlin Venable of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Virginia family also includes her surviving son Philip Gatlin of Las Vegas and his wife Deborah Gatlin, her granddaughter Carmen Elaine Gatlin and grandson Philip Dustin Gatlin both of Memphis, Tennessee. Her loving and devoted caretakers for several years have been her granddaughter Rachel Singleton, her husband Kautriaun Singleton, as well as her great grandsons Elijah and Isaiah. Other great grandchildren of Virginia include Philicity Gatlin of Martin, Tennessee, Stephen Bennett Gatlin, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Zack Lucas Gatlin of Louisville, Kentucky.
Whether you knew the tall, beautiful, and accomplished woman as Virginia, Dr. Bakay, Grandmother, Grandma Virginia, or just simply Mama...... She will be missed.
Services in Las Vegas will be held at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave. Las Vegas, NV. 89119 at 2:00 pm on Saturday May 30th.
A eulogy and visitation will be hosted at Johnson Funeral Home from 1:30 pm-2:30 pm on Saturday June 6th. Graveside rites and internment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Newbern, Tennessee where both her son and parents are buried.
