Virginia May Kane

September 24, 1930 — December 13, 2015

Virginia had just celebrated the Thanksgiving Holiday with all her family. Her son and his wife had chosen this holiday to come west to visit. Her sister and brother-in-law drove up from California and her oldest granddaughter flew home. A joyous family reunion was celebrated at her daughter and son-in-law's home. Virginia unexpectedly passed away December 13, 2015. Her oldest son and daughter were at her bedside as she returned to her waiting arms of her husband. Virginia May Roark was born September 24, 1930 in Heyworth Illinois, grew up and went school in Rantoul. She graduated from Rantoul Township High School in 1950. She then met and married William Gene Kane who was stationed at Chanute Air Force Field. They married on July 1, 1951 and were married for over 50 years. As still newly married, Bill was transferred to Newfoundland Canada, where their first child William Gene Kane Jr. was born. Virginia spoke of a fond memory of watching the Statue of Liberty coming into view as they returned home. The family of three was then transferred to Livermore California. They welcomed their second son Douglas Allen Kane. After Bills service in the Air Force was completed, the family of four once again returned east settling in Centralia Illinois. Here, their third child was born. In 1963, Bill and Virginia had decided they had had enough of the snow and moved to Las Vegas. Bill continued to work for the U.S. Postal Service while Virginia found employment with Centel Phone Service until her retirement. Virginia became and remained good friends with many of her co-workers. Virginia and Bill enjoyed traveling. The Kanes also enjoyed camping with their children. Holly, the family dachshund, kept Virginia's feet warm by sleeping under the covers. Upon Virginia's retirement from Centel (now known as Sprint) they were able to travel even more in their R.V. They returned to Illinois as often as possible visiting family and old friends. Both Bill and Virginia were avid UNLV Running Rebel Basketball supporters having season tickets for many years. Virginia remained actively involved with her dear friends, they ate, partied, volunteered, and travel regularly. Virginia's last trip home was to attend her 60th Class Reunion.

Virginia is survived by her oldest son, William (Las Vegas), Douglas (Pat) (Fairport, NY), Glenda (Jon Martinet) (Las Vegas); granddaughters Madison (Eugene, OR) and Austen (Las Vegas); and her sister Jane (Richard) Gallup (Newport Beach, CA).
