Virtie Carol Holley, of Las Vegas, passed away Dec. 29, 2012. She was born to Harriett Bowman, Feb. 22, 1931, in Monroe, La., and raised by both Harriet and her stepfather, Charley Dickson, who have both preceded her in death. She was the older of two children. Virtie married Otis Bing Holley June 17, 1955. Otis also preceded her in death. Virtie and Otis adopted Carl Holley, who preceded her in death prior to giving birth to son, Prince Holley, and later added to their family Brad Holley through adoption, and became the legal guardian of Terence Dickson. Virtie attended Wendell Phillips High School in Chicago, and was active in many sports including volleyball, and outdoor sports like tobogganing. She attended and graduated from Ball State College in Muncie, Ind. later Ball State University with a degree in elementary education and teaching. She participated in the band during her college years and worked after classes in the cafeteria. Following graduation, Virtie was recruited by the Youngstown, Ohio School District and later the Cleveland School District. She was a teacher of elementary education and a counselor in Ohio and retired from the Cleveland School District after 35 years of distinguished service. When Virtie moved to Las Vegas in 1978, she continued to counsel in the Clark County and Laughlin School Districts and retired after 20 years. She was a born again educator. In addition to her drive to educate, Virtie became active as a real estate agent in the Las Vegas market. She continued in that profession until her passing. She loved to travel and has visited exotic places including, China most recently, and others with her longtime friends. When Virtie was not at home, at work, or caring for her family and friends, you could most likely find her relaxing at the Casino in front of a slot machine. That was her favorite pastime activity. Virtie valued and nurtured her relationships with her family. Family was important to her. She believed in her family. Virtie was like a gardener and her family was her garden. The soil was her hope, the nourishment was her words, and the sunlight was her love. She helped her family to grow and did her best to keep weeds from corrupting her flowers. When a plant grew strong and healthy she was proud. When a plant showed weakness, she did not discard it. Instead she trimmed the leaves and started the process of gardening all over again. She tried to plant the most beautiful garden one has ever seen. She worked tirelessly. Although she has departed this earth, her garden remains. This is the legacy she leaves behind. In her name, her family honors it. Virtie is survived by sister, Eunice Jean McDowell of Las Vegas sons, Bradford Holley of Las Vegas, and Prince Holley and his wife, Beverly Holley of Denver grandchildren, Preston Knight and Quentin Holley and a host of family and friends. Viewing will be from 10 a.m.noon, Sunday, Jan. 6, followed by a homegoing celebration, both at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89119.
